Counselling available through Catalyst
Counselling is usually brief (up to 8 sessions), though longer-term therapy is also available. Counselling approaches are tailored to the specific needs of the individual, and may include CBT, or other models including Person Centred, Psychodynamic and Systemic approaches. Issues addressed may include work in the following areas:
- Managing change
- Stress related issues
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Anger
- Relationship issues
- Abuse
- Communication issues
- Bereavement and loss
- Alcohol problems
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that how we feel depends upon what we think about what happens, rather than what actually happens. The same event may affect two different people in entirely different ways, depending on their interpretation of that event. If our interpretations cause us distress and we notice that we frequently are more upset or anxious or angry than other people in a similar situation, it can be helpful to learn new alternative ways of interpreting events. We can then take a more balanced view of things which is likely to make it easier to cope.
CBT is particularly well suited to brief counselling. It is widely used in the NHS, and the States of Guernsey are currently exploring how to make it more widely available locally
